TMT/ Holter
We are here for your care.
The results of ECG can be normal in a resting individual. But when an individual is not at rest, diseases of the heart can surface and can make it impossible for a person to function normally. Therefore, a treadmill test is done.
A treadmill test involves having the patient walk on a treadmill while she/he is connected to an electrocardiogram (ECG) machine. The speed of the treadmill is controlled by the doctor and varied based on the stamina of the patient. During the procedure, recording of electrical signals from the heart is done and it is analysed to check for presence of abnormalities or improper functioning of the heart. It is performed to find out the body’s response to strenuous exercise. It is a reliable and safe test.
Why is TMT done?
When a person is at a risk of developing coronary heart disease, their doctor may recommend getting TMT done. Getting an TMT is helpful in determining how the heart is functioning by indirectly measuring arterial blood flow to your heart. At different levels of intensity, blood flow to heart is measured when the patient is resting and when he/she is exercising.
TMT can also be used to determine a person’s general fitness. TMT is usually recommended as a preliminary test and if required, other more accurate and intense tests may be recommended after a TMT.
How should I prepare for TMT?
During the treadmill test, you will have to exercise and for that, you should wear comfortable clothes that fit you. Your shoes should be appropriate and fit for jogging and walking. Moreover, you should not eat or drink for a few hours before the test. Going through intense exercise on a full stomach can cause nausea. Also, keep in mind that you should not starve yourself as that may make you too weak to take the test. If you suffer from an existing heart condition and take medicines for it, you need to consult your doctor about whether they need to be stopped temporarily before the test.
How is it done?
First, electrodes are connected to the patient’s chest. The initial measurement of heart rate and blood pressure, when the patient is at rest, is taken. Next, measurements are taken while the patient is walking on the treadmill at a warm, mild speed. The speed is increased according to an established, safe protocol till a certain heart rate is reached. If the readings are abnormal and the patient is uncomfortable, the test will be stopped before its done.
Holter monitoring
Holter monitoring is a 24-hour EC monitoring of a patient to evaluate their cardiac status. Using a Holter ECG device that the patient is connected to for 24 hours, the electrical activity of the heart throughout the day is measured. The patient can carry out his/her usual activities like normal. Holter monitoring is incredibly useful for making accurate diagnoses.
