Commonly treated conditions

  • • Dermatitis: It is the inflammation of skin in which the skin becomes sore, red, and swollen and, at times, develops tiny blisters. Its symptoms are itchiness, dry skin, flaking skin, thickened skin, blisters that may sometimes have oozing and crusting, rash on swollen skin, and bumps in hair follicles.
  • • Scleroderma: Skin and other areas of the body become inflamed. The symptoms vary depending on the part of body that’s affected. It is treated with medication, and sometimes, amputation.
  • • Raynaud’s phenomenon: The blood vessels in the extremities become narrow and as a result, the blood flow becomes restricted. Its symptoms include cold fingers or toes, skin discolouration, numbness, and alteration of skin colour to red, accompanied by throbbing pain, on exposure to warmth. With medication and nerve surgery, Raynaud’s phenomenon can be treated.
      • • Alopecia areata: It is hair loss leading to appearance of bald spots in different areas of the body. Its symptoms include hair thinning and baldness, tingling or pain the area where hair loss is occurring, pruritus, and splitting and thinning of nails. It can be treated with medication and phototherapy.
      • • Rosacea: Red patches appear on the face and blood vessels become visible. Other symptoms include tiny, red, pus-filled bumps, irritation, and dryness in the eyes, feeling tender and hot in the skin, swelling and reddening of the eyelids and enlarged nose (especially in men). Medication and electrosurgery help in the management of the disease.
      • • Hidradenitis Suppurativa:Painful bumps develop under the skin in the hair roots near some sweat glands. Its other symptoms are itching and swelling of the bumps, pain, and bad odour when the pus leaks. It can be treated with medication, surgical excision, and laser therapy.
      • • Ichthyosis: It is a genetic disorder in which skin becomes dry, and scales develop on the skin due to which the skin becomes thick. Its other symptoms are itchiness, erythema, painful cracks on the skin and peeling of the skin. It can be treated with the medication, self-care practices and a healthy diet.
      • • Pachyonychia Congenita: It is a group of conditions in which keratinization occurs. Keratinisation is the process by which keratin is formed and accumulated in the outermost part of the skin. It is characterized by thickened nails, thickened skin of soles and palms, and development of white patches in mucous membranes. Cysts, if any, are surgically removed through incision and drainage or excision.
